Bunker 13: Experiments

The fundamental story behind Bunker 13 is players find themselves in an experimental nuclear bunker. Little known to them though – they are the experiment.

Players are given a character and must either defend the bunker from invasion by raiders or mutants or survive the experiment depending on play type.

For example a simple game may consist of one ‘Raider’ player per three or more ‘Bunker Dwellers’. Each night a Bunker Dweller goes missing so it is up to the Bunker to find the raider fast. Lynchings can only take place with a 50% majority so think before you act.

A more complex game might add Crazy Ivan (who wants to be lynched), the Stim Junkie who can help or hinder the bunker at will or the Chef who has to try and keep everyone alive.

Expansions? Village Life grows larger…

Those if you who have been following this blog will know that I have been working on a game called Village Life, currently in version 0.4D. Its a board game where players explore 24 unknown tiles, then build up an economy placing industry buildings like farms and blacksmiths and finally work their way into politics to become the local lord. More info and an overview here.

As I idly wait for the first proper printed prototype from China – currently somewhere in the middle of deepest Russia – I have been thinking of different expansions that can be made and am quite excited by two ideas. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

1. The Island

Players receive a new deck of 24 exploration cards and a few new buildings. The tiles have an outline of an island on the back and a broken bridge that connects it to the mainland.

On the tile faces there are new places to explore once the connecting bridge has been repaired. These include:

Lake: allows Fishery: +1 food for every 2 farms owned

Tiki tower: allows you to travel to any unknown space 

Beach: allows Beach Hut – 1 income per turn

Jungle – allows Forester, but player is delayed for one turn (cannot explore)

Mineral rich sands – allows Mine

Broken Bridge – connects to mainland when upgraded

Tribe – can’t be built on but something special happens when you land? 

Volcano: exploration quest linked to the Tribe.

2: The Cult

That’s right! The cult is coming to your town! Don’t delay – join today!


The cult introduces a new building – the Dark Temple. The player that builds it becomes the head cultist and spreads dark influence across the town in place of Honour.

Once the majority of a player’s buildings have been caught in this influence, they join the cult and help to spread the dark influence across the town.

If the majority of players turn to the cult, or the head of the Council is a cultist, the town council changes to a new Cult board, replacing the Council and having different powers.

Players can use the Keep buildings to protect their buildings from influence. These now spreading Council Influence instead.

Mechanically, cult players receive Influence instead of Honour. 

Have alternative to honor which is power gained by spreading cult and gaining power in the cult leadership. – black tokens used as honor but also placed on buildings.

Of course neither of these will be done before the base game is ready, and both will need a lot of testing first – but hope these give you some inspiration for your own games!

A Dictator’s Power

Game type: card game

Length: 30-60 mins


One dictator has to control political and military/security to stay in power

Other players represent other areas of the government under the power of the dictator. They play cards to gain influence, political power, control over the military etc.

Game ends when the dictator is ousted from power to install a new player as dictator, or manages to remain in power for a certain number of turns

Cards/players could include

Political cards

External influences eg UN


Media influence


There could also be situations that come up overtime to add a little randomness to the game.

Focus on: Sins of Satan

This is my take on a Secret Hitler style game, and one of the first games I made as a card game. It’s designed to be a little quicker and overcome some of the problems we had playing it. It’s also designed with a different theme – that of stopping Satan from corrupting the world.

Rules are similar to “Secret Hitler”

One of the main challenges in designing the game was making sure both sides had a good chance of winning. As Virtuous players usually have more players, the virtues played are often more helpful for sinful players to offset the difference. Sins on the other hand usually greatly benefit the sinful players. 

Gluttony is a sin

More sins = better chance to win as the sinners

Temperance my well be a virtue, but it doesnt help you win…
