Design Diary February

Morning all!

As is usual in the Spring with being a teacher, progress is grinding to a halt for a while as life ramps up for the exam season and the inevitable visit from Ofsted (schools inspectors).

We’ve just had the visit from Ofsted this weekend, so hopefully that all went well – looks like it.

I’m also on a course for children and adolescents mental health, which will run until early April and allow me to better understand and help students in our schools. I’m also hoping I’ll be able to make better materials that they can use, like the mood journals we made previously. These came out about 9 months ago and I really want to improve and update them to make them better, and if possible, cheaper.

Regarding our gamebook, chapter one is out and were making headway into chapter 2 – you can follow our progress here and check out chapter 1 here! The books looking to be about 5 chapters total, running 600 to 700 pages. Chapter 2 is almost into the editing phase too which is great!

I’ve also started having a look back at some of our earlier games – such as Tranquility Station. If you’ve ever played Space Station 13 (SS13), think that but as a board game. I want to rework it a bit and see if we can make it a think.

Other than that, enjoy the lousy smarch weather!

Design diary January

Hi all!

Christmas is long gone and the winter is settling in here in the UK. We’re making headway into our choose your own adventure/fighting fantasy book with the first chapter being finalised and edited.

You can check out an early version on the Patreon now, and subscribers will get an early view at the completed first chapter when it’s released.

We’re aiming for around 400 pages in total.

Speaking of early releases, we’ve moved to an early access Patreon model so subscribers will be able to access games, books and other things either a week or month sooner than public release.

In the last month we’ve put up new versions of Village Life (0.7) and Pilgrims Walk (early alpha), so if you have time – check them out when they pop out from early access.

Finally were undergoing a little brand change at some point, so keep your eyes peeled!

Have a good month and see you all next time!

Getting the Goods, Pg 14 draft

Getting past the security point is relatively easy. You drive the car through the security checkpoint and hand over your papers. The guard waves you through and you continue your journey.

After what seems like an eternity, you arrive at a run down bar in a somewhat less destroyed part of the city. Everywhere around you there are parked cars covered in dirt, some with propaganda posters plastered over them, each trying to cover the other.  A serious looking security bouncer is outside the door, but there is no sign of any customers.

The bouncer looks you up and down, then motions you to go inside through a long corridor covered with more propaganda posters.  At the end of the corridor, through a series of doors, a large room at the back is filled with weapons of all descriptions, dumped on the ground in piles. Furniture is piled up in one corner of what must have once been a dance floor. A stern woman with a red beret hands you a couple of backpacks and motions you to leave, which you do quickly.

At the security checkpoint you are terrified, but are waved through. Suddenly a military jeep appears in front of you. A group of armed men shouting at you to stop the car, do you:

  • Try to go around them and escape (page 15)
  • Grab what’s in the backpack and defend yourself (page 47)
  • Stop and put up your hands (17)

Let us know what you think, this part is from section where the character has been forced to help the rebels.

Sandbrook, A Novella Pt.8

A series of letters, journals and memoirs about the incident aboard the SS Sandbrook

The High Inquisitor, Lord Bromley DSS. HIQ.

Sir, I write with response to your recent letter with confirmation. I believe the source of many of the recent troubles to have come from the North and I am reliable informed by a trusted contact that part of the recent chaos stems not directly from the Western War, but rather from a recently influential group with Northern connections. Reports of anti religious activity have also been noted emanating from the region. These anti religious sentiments need to be routed out and destroyed with all due haste before they destabilise the kingdom.

I make haste to Northbrook, Sandbrook and the Northern Kingdoms via Shepherd’s Corner upon which I will make a full report.

In the name of the empire,

Inquisitor Stoic

Inquisitor manual fragments

This manual appears to be some compendium for Inquisitors – obviously never meant to leave the High Halls. A lot of it is burnt as if lit up and thrown in a bin, few pages survive except for information on interrogation and religious captives ~ Incident Researcher 1385

On interrogation techniques

Once the suspect has been placed into custody, interrogation techniques should be used to gather information as swiftly as possible. The reasons for this are twofold.

1. To ensure death does not deprive the empire of timely valuable knowledge leading to arrest.

2. To prevent the possibility of escape or early death by the captive.

Chapter 13: Treatment of alternative religions and religious cults

Religious preachers, prophets and others deemed lost or treasonous should be treated with immediate removal of the tongue. This prevents blasphemy from becoming passed to observers. Ideally this should take place immediately upon capture and transferral.

Interrogation and death should not take place in front of crowds due to possibility of cultic influence leading to rescue or conversion.

All evidence of cultic or blasphemous activity must be reported immediately to the High Inquisitor.

Interrogation technique for suspected cultic members:

  1. Removal of tongue
  2. Removal of all clothing including jewelry
  3. Covering of all cultic symbols, including tattoos, henna, marks and scar tissue
  4. Presentation of pen and paper for confession. Note: If any unusual script, icons or symbols are presented – immediately burn paper and remove hand of traitor. This will associate the drawing of illegal material with pain and discourage repeat actions. If performing confession with Junior Inquisitor present, end immediately and proceed to Soul Cleansing.
  5. Gain confession by use of The Techniques.
  6. Disposal

Sandbrook, A Novella Pt.6

A series of letters, journals and memoirs about the incident aboard the SS Sandbrook

The Daily Bugle, clipping, Date unknown

…The ‘Ghost ship’ sighted off the Northern Isle over the past few days has intrigued locals. Lighthouse keeper Paulis Norman commented that it had appeared on Thursday morning and sat eerily still ever since. No known rocky outcrops have been reported on an otherwise well travelled shipping route. The ship itself appears to be ghostly, with no visible sails and casting a dark shadow as the sun rises. Mr. Norman states the ship may have found itself in trouble and off course following a recent storm. Sailors are reminded to ensure ships are fully fitted with life boats in the event of an emergency on board – especially as we run into Autumn…

The Daily Bugle, clipping, Date unknown

… Captain found lashed to the wheel, his face distorted in a cry of anguish. Mrs. Gorth, who found the shipwreck early this morning had to be recovered from the scene after fainting. The local investigators have called in the experts, but cannot explain why so few are onboard except that they must have thrown themselves off deck to escape the raging fire. Below deck have been cordoned off to the public – but our sources have reported broken coffin like crates and signs of crazed scratch marks from some mad animal or animals. The Captain’s quarters are also jammed shut as if barricaded from the other side – a strange octopus logo marked in wax over the keyhole. More on this as the story unfolds!

Our little ‘Cult’ of Sandbrook Pt. 2

Part 2: Latest News: Danger on Board!
Part 1

SS Sandbrook sinking in flames

Terror on Board!

News has come in about trouble aboard the SS Sanbrook. Telecomunications sent from the Captain during the night indicate foul play. Apparantly members of the crew were awoken suddenly when an explosion rocked the ship in the night. On investigating the engine rooms our famed Mystic Madame Fazir saw a robed person leaving the scene. A statement fron Sandbrook Shipping indicates that a royal inquisitor is on board and may be the target of the attack. Negociations between the Sandbrook Cult and the Inquisition came to an explosive end last month following the assasination of Head Inquisitor Lord Broderic and this could be linked.

Want to find out what really happened aboard? Mystery on the SS Sandbrook is our free to print and play card game for September. You can find it here from the first of September.

Heist at Sandbrook Museum!

The only released picture on record of the person known only as “The Mastermind”

A heist at Sandbrook Museum took place on Monday, with thieves taking several valuble treasures, including an ancient book supposed to be over 3000 years old! According to the local investigation team the task was well planned and has lead to the arrest and investigation of 2 suspects, one of which has been released without charge. According to our sources, the person known only as ‘The Mastermind’ left his calling card of a bloodied severed hand at the museum and a message to the investigation team stating simply “He lives”. Very strange!

Sandbrook Heist! is a free print and play card game currently in development for a late 2017, early 2018 release.
